Among everything I've produced to date, the mystical dark-folk experiment occasionally performed as Deathmoth has been my most personal and contemplative work. This is likely why, like my soul, it remains unfinished. I began songwriting in my early twenties, then more or less shelved the project upon the launch of Ghost Village Films and deep-diving into video production for several years. Recently, ferociously, the muse & calling of this music has returned.
I'm now in a season of integration: Learning to walk in both worlds of film and music-making without setting the two at energetic odds with each other. When I shifted my creative and career efforts to video those years ago, I'd believed it was a path that required my near-exclusive focus to be successful--that there would be no space in that for these songs or what it would take to complete the project and perform them well. This was a strange delirium. Gratefully, I've woken up from it.
The songs, and music broadly, have always been at the root of who I am and what I have to offer in this world. I realize now that this truth is not only still available for me to embrace while continuing in videography as the business priority, but that doing so is fundamental both to this and other dimensions of my life, namely spiritual. I am at my best in all my work--whether for client projects or my own, and in whatever medium--when I am attending to my inner world with openness & curiosity, sharing freely & truthfully from these depths and what's discovered there.
It's music that provides the deepest yet most accessible channel for that kind of expression for me, transfiguring it into a form that's communicable and invitational. I'm presently recording & producing a demo album of this work, and I look forward to sharing it with you in time.
While I'd set aside my artistic & contemplative practice with regard to songwriting & performance during this hiatus, I didn't abandon music-making altogether. A varied assortment of rhythmic and meditative electronic instrumentals, Space Logic became a personal side project, now surviving as an artifact of a different flavor from the early Ghost Village era, most tracks having originated as compositions for client video work. It is to me a light-hearted musical release valve engaged when I need a break from the inherent complexities of video production, cyberspace, planet Earth...
Drums
Drums were my first instrument, beginning in middle school. Learning the drums and playing with bands off and on over the years gave me an early foundation focused around rhythm, dynamics, and composition which has since been fundamental to songwriting and arranging. It's drumming (along with watching an insane amount of movies) that also developed my intuition for video direction and editing.
